The STARS (Students & Trainees Advocating for Resource Stewardship) program is recruiting 1styear Medical Students for the UCSD chapter. The program seeks to train student leaders as champions of high-value healthcare and equip them with tools and knowledge to influence their peers and hopefully build a future of sustainable healthcare. The Executive Director of STARS, Dr. Chris Moriates, is a UCSD alumnus (UCSD SOM 2009), and our campus has hosted a chapter since the program’s inception.
The STARS program brings together first year medical students from across the country to create a learning community that fosters a culture of high-value healthcare within their medical schools.
We are currently recruiting for the 9th annual STARS cohort, led by Dr. Greg Seymann of Hospital Medicine. We will select 2-4 students to participate and attend the leadership summit held virtually on 1/16 and 1/17/26. Following the training, the students will help create and lead value initiatives locally and influence their peers and campus community. Further details about STARS can be found on the website.
To be considered for this opportunity, please compose a 1-2 paragraph statement of interest for review by the selection committee. This brief essay should describe reasons for your interest and any relevant experience you may have. Submit your application via email to the faculty director Dr. Seymann at gseymann@health.ucsd.edu.
Deadline for responses is October 29, 2025, with interviews and selection in November. We encourage you sign up to attend the Value-Based Medicine SIG meeting on 10/28/25 at noon to learn more about our chapter and connect with the current STARS.
